GUEST ARTIST
Monjia Manai Sonnius
Artist and Educator
Monjia Manai Sonnius was born in Sweden in 1961 and resides in an old house nestled in the forest outside Bengtsfors, a small village in the southwest of Sweden. A high-school engineer by training, Monjia worked at Ericsson for about a decade as a programmer and product manager. Currently, she is employed by the municipality of Bengtsfors, focusing on IT in education. In 1982, Monjia embraced Islam and became an active voice within the Muslim community. During her early years as a convert, she lectured in schools, contributed articles to an Islamic magazine, and organized courses and gatherings. Her journey as an artist began in 1990, exploring various mediums, including silverwork, stone grinding for jewelry, pottery, and stitching. While she enjoyed these crafts, it wasn't until 2017 that she discovered Islamic geometric patterns, which ignited her passion. In 2018, she joined the Facebook group of Mohamad Aljanabi, and by 2020, she participated in one of his early online courses. Outside her artistic pursuits, Monjia is an avid gardener who has transformed a vast garden from the ground up, combining her love for creativity and nature.
