What is a Naskh Script?
The term ‘naskh’ is derived from the Arabic word ‘نَسَخَ’ meaning to transcribe or copy. Naskh replaced Kufic as the script of choice for the writing of the Noble Qur’an. Due to its legibility, it is mostly used to write lengthy texts.
It is also used in the printed Arabic books. In the 10th century Naskh was developed as one of the Al-aqlam al-sitta (six scripts). Later refined by Seyh Hamdullah in the 15th century and is still used today.

Muhammad Melifini Hobe
Muhammad was born and raised in Johannesburg, South Africa. He became a Muslim in 1991, and in 1994 he studied Islamic studies at Waterfall Islamic Institute and became interested in Arabic calligraphy.
A Turkish calligrapher Hilal Kazan visited South Africa and was introduced to Muhammad. Hilal commented he had a good hand but required a teacher. Subsequently, IRCICA and the renowned Hasan Celebi invited him and made arrangements for him to travel to Istanbul.
In 2009 he travelled to Istanbul for a trial period of 3 months, then returned in 2011 where he studied with Hasan Çelebi and Efdaluddin Kılıç, receiving his Ijaza in a very short time of three years. Practicing for 10 years since, he is the first South African to receive Ijaza from the Calligraphy Masters of Istanbul, in which he was given the title, "Calligrapher of the House of Mandela."
