ABOUT COURSE

What is an Islamic Biomorphic pattern

Islamic Biomorphic pattern consists of vegetal patterns that are inspired by nature but aren’t a direct representation of it. Rather, they are stylised and manipulated to create a more abstract feel and transport the viewer to another world.

In this course, Ostad Rahim teaches you how to create beautiful and elegant compositions using both Khatai and Islimi motifs, adding new designs to our knowledge and learning how to create frames and borders.

Khatai is a type of Islamic Biomorphic pattern composed of leaves, flowers and buds that emerge in gentle sweeping curves that mimic the underlying order of nature.

Islimi motifs, often known as Rumi motifs, were originally inspired by animals and consist of a bulbous, round shape with a comma-like body attached to the pointed end. With the spread of Islam, these motifs turned into abstract ornamental motifs, losing their zoomorphic roots, and became a representation of the universal balance of God.
